Upgrades can be a cost-efficient way to get a better computer. And you can keep your programs and data the way you like them!    Most major upgrades consist of a motherboard, CPU and RAM. You might also need a new case if your old one is proprietary (most of the ones made by major computer companies won't accommodate a new motherboard) or if the new motherboard you choose is otherwise incompatible with the new case.

New motherboards use the ATX form factor. Many old computers are AT style. Depending on how old the computer is, you may be able to use the same RAM.    If all you need is the motherboard, CPU, and RAM, that means you're keeping your old case and power supply, floppy drive, CD ROM drive, hard drive, video card, sound card, modem, and anything else you've got installed. Of course, you can still use your keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
